Microsoft Windows is the most popular Operating System for standard desktop PCs.
It is compatible with almost every application and offers great security.
Some drawbacks to Windows is the price to purchase Windows itself is $140 - $200 if you buy it straight from Microsoft but you can buy it from 3rd party resellers for a lot cheaper ($9 to $20).
Windows does however have strict hardware requirements,
you can bypass the hardware check while installing Windows 11 by following the instructions here.
MacOS is the Operating System that comes on every Apple Mac, it has less compatibility than Windows but more than Linux, cannot be purchased, offers minimal security and is very hard to run on a non Apple computer. Many people use MacOS because of its ease of use and its seamless integration with other Apple products. MacOS is known for its strong performance in creative fields such as graphic design, video editing, and music production due to its optimized software and hardware ecosystem.
Linux is open-source, ad-free, and is generally more secure than Windows and MacOS. Instead of just downloading "Linux" like Windows or MacOS, you will be downloading a Linux distribution (Linux itself is just a kernel). Linux has even more applications than Microsoft Windows, Linux hosts about 95% of web servers, Android phones, Home assistants, and is also used with other things like ATM machines.
There are hundreds of Linux distributions, and I put some of the most popular distributions here. Ubuntu is a very popular Linux Distribution, because ease of use. Arch Linux is a distribution that can be challenging to install, therefore it is for more experienced users. Not all Linux distributions can't be downloaded directly and have to be downloaded with a mirror (EX:Arch Linux) .
A mirror can be better sometimes because mirrors are different servers that are located around the world and can have better download speeds, an example well known mirror for most countries is mirror.rackspace.com. To learn more about The Linux kernel and shell, check out our Linux page
ChromeOS is a Operating System that is preinstalled on Chromebooks, it can be installed on other non chromebook computers with the use of ChromeOS Flex.
Chromebooks themselves are not very upgradable and cant boot from USBs unless you flash custom firmware, or enable Boot legacy.
ChromeOS typically runs a lot faster than other Operating systems because its severly optimized for web browsing.
Therefore they were able to remove a lot of features that other operating systems use.
